HAMANN turns BMW 5 series Gran Turismo into top-class crossover between SUV and limousine

HAMANN Motorsport has given the current BMW 5 Gran Turismo a significantly more dynamic appearance and turned the crossover between a comfortably spacious SUV and an elegant limousine into one of the most exclusive multi-purpose vehicles in the luxury class. As a renowned specialist of exquisite modifications for BMW automobiles, HAMANN is offering powerful performance improvements, noteworthy sportiness when it comes to engine components and an aerodynamics programme with exciting styling for the Gran Turismo in the 5 series.

The high sitting position of a SUV, the versatility of a van and the exclusive feeling of spaciousness of a limousine: The BMW 5 series Gran Turismo developed specifically for the US market is already an unusual top-class, multi-purpose vehicle when it leaves the plant. HAMANN has topped this and has given the BMW, internally known as the F 07 series, a much more exclusive and sporty look. Sophisticated components have been developed for the HAMANN aerodynamics programme and processed with top-quality workmanship. The result: a breathtaking overall design with optimised airflow across the entire vehicle. A lowering kit for the models 530d, 535i and 550i including air suspension provides the multi-purpose limousine with a much longer and dynamic appearance, even in a standing position. Perfectly synergised body components complete the exclusive appearance of the GT 5 series by HAMANN. The product range includes a front spoiler to be mounted on the standard front spoiler of the series, side skirts and a rear spoiler in a subtle or striking design, as required. Both provide reduced lift force at the rear axle and thus considerably improve the driving dynamics. A new rear apron makes room for the HAMANN mufflers. The four impressive stainless steel exhaust pipes feature an imposing diameter of 90 mm and create an extraordinarily robust sound.

The HAMANN motor specialists have developed a powerful performance gain from 245 PS (180 kW) to 275 PS (202 kW) for the 5 series GT 530d. The torque, an even more important factor when it comes to driving pleasure, simultaneously increases from 540 Nm to an impressive 620 Nm at 1750 RPM. Thanks to HAMANN Motorsport, the 5 series Gran Turismo 530d, whose performance is enhanced due to optimisation of the engine characteristics by means of reprogramming of the series Motronic, boasts 20 Nm more torque than the standard 535d, and that for only a fraction of the surcharge actually due.

Befitting its image, the modified Gran Turismo boasts gigantic 22-inch tyres: The elegantly styled HAMANN alloy wheel ANNIVERSARY EVO has been specially developed for the requirements of heavyweight, truly massive vehicles. In line with HAMANN's philosophy on modifications, state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and the use of special aluminium alloy ensure maximum load capacities at low weight. HAMANN ANNIVERSARY EVO designer wheels for the BMW 5 Gran Turismo are available in the sizes 9.0 x 22 for the front and 10.5 x 22 for the back. Wide-base tyres are fitted front (265/30ZR20) and back (295/25ZR20).

The HAMANN interior matches the grand feel of the exterior. Pedals and the footrest come in an aluminium design, and the black foot mats feature a silver HAMANN inscription for sporty emphasis. HAMANN Motorsport offers a high-quality, wide range of products for additional modification and individual tailoring of the interior of the BMW 5 series Gran Turismo.

New performance package for the Audi RS6

This latest power upgrade for the Audi RS6 comes from REIFEN KOCH who is offering a serious power boost to the already sporty German tourer.

Even though the standard production version of the Audi RS6 is powerful enough as is for most drivers with its 580HP V10, tuners of all sorts are jumping on the bandwagon lately. German firm Reifen Koch has just released a new performance package for the RS6 comprising of engine mods and new alloy wheels.

Consisting of a revised ECU, a sport air filter and a high-performance exhaust system, the package enables the twin-turbo 5.0-liter V10 engine to produce 700 PS (522 kW / 690 hp) and 790 Nm (583 lb-ft) of torque - an increase of 120 PS (89 kW / 118 hp) and 140 Nm (103 lb-ft). Thanks to the added power, the SR RS6 has a top speed of approximately 330 km/h (205 mph).

The tuner considers that the RS6 doesn’t need any visual improvement, so it has not developed an exterior kit for the vehicle. However, the tuning house offers a new set of Schmidt Revolution CC Line light alloy wheels for the car. These use a multispoke angular design and features a polished outer rim. The one-piece wheels come in a 22 inch size and are wrapped in high performance sport tires, which come in a 265/30 size.

700 HP and 22 inch machine of Schmidt Revolution for the AUDI RS6

Engine performance is no problem for the current AUDI RS6. The intensified variant of the RS6 from Rodalben is hardly as close to racing-sport as any other pickup with road permission. The series achievement of the sport model was raised by means of software optimization, sport air cleaner and a sport exhaust system from 580 HP to 700 HP. Parallel the maximum torque grows to 790 Nm (series of 650 Nm) and the maximum speed is with approx. 330 km/h.

Now the AUDI RS6 starts into a new round, because after the vehicle was performance-related optimized, now also dominates the sharpened Schmidt wheel set. Because the best was also here good straight enough. A still more sporty optics obtains the 22 inch wheel/tire combination, which is available for the RS6 immediately. The one-piece Schmidt Revolution CC LINE light alloy wheels with polished external bed measures not less than 10x22 inch and fills out the wheel housings with high speed tires in size 265/30 22 all around optimally. Thus place is enough for the AUDI carbon high speed brake assembly.

Audi will have its own stand at the GTI meet at the Wörthersee Tour 2010 and will display a lineup of customized versions of the new Audi A1 hatchback.

The seven models have been created by Woorthersee chief designer and his team to demonstrate the ability to customize the A1 and all possible alternatives before it’s released this fall. One of the most striking designs is the FC Bayern , decorated with the colors and emblem of the German team together with the dorsal number 10 and the name of Arjen Robben to mark the place in the final of the Champions League 2010 be held in Madrid.

Audi at "Wörthersee Tour 2010"

* Audi showing seven A1 models as spectacular "motto vehicles"

* Innovative adhesive film designs from "Follow Me" to "FC Bayern"

* 19 Audi vehicles at the 3,000 square meter stand

For the fourth year in a row, AUDI AG will have its own stand at the GTI meet at the Wörthersee and is once again expecting Audi fans from throughout Europe. The new Audi A1 is playing a leading role at the 29th Wörthersee Tour (May 12 - 15) in Reifnitz (Carinthia), Austria. Innovative adhesive film designs, vibrant paint finishes as well as exterior add-on parts and a matching interior will transform a total of seven models of the new compact car into spectacular motto vehicles. Furthermore, the Audi R8 GT, a limited-production version of the high-performance sports car, will be presented to the general public for the first time at Wörthersee shortly after its world premiere.

Standing on the southern shore of the Wörthersee (Lake Wörth) in Reifnitz is the 3,000 square meter (32,291.73 sq ft) Audi stand, where in addition to the Audi A1 and the Audi R8 GT, the company will also be presenting the new RS 5 and the R8 V10 Spyder supercar daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Audi fans will be able to get up close and personal with a total of 19 different models bearing the four-ring logo. The focus of this year's Wörthersee Tour stand is the A1 special editions.

"The Audi A1 fits in with the GTI meet because customization has always been a central topic for the Audi fans here at the Wörthersee and will also play a special role for A1 customers," says Stefan Sielaff, Head of Audi Design. Sielaff and his team have developed seven different models for the appearance at the Wörthersee, including a model sporting an "FC Bayern" look. The Audi A1 1.4 TFSI shows the design possibilities offered by add-on parts, special paint finishes and adhesive films.

This compact car has the Number 10 of FC Bayern star Arjen Robben on the roof and on the doors. The adhesive design with through-colored film and digitally printed film makes a very high-quality impression, as this technique shows off reflections to their best advantage. With the large logo of Germany's most successful soccer club on the hood, the restyled front bumper and a modified diffuser in the back, this A1 immediately stands out from the crowd. Another highlight is the sill sporting visual cues from the S line.

It is not just the exterior that differs from the production vehicle. The Audi design team also styled the interior of the motto vehicles with the attention to detail that is so typical of Audi. The A1 "competition kit" with the "legends interior plus" package, for example, is strongly based on the Audi rally vehicles from the 1980s. In addition to exterior visual cues such as the Amalfi White paint finish and the original colors of the Urquattro (Begonia Red, Stone Gray and Gray Brown), the interior also evokes memories of the racing successes racked up by quattro technology, which is celebrating its 30th birthday. The center console, the door handles, the rearview mirror - the rally design with the bold Number 1 extends thematically throughout the entire cabin. The "competition kit legends interior" and "competition kit legends interior plus" accessory packages are precisely matched to the exterior and, in contrast to the other motto vehicles, will also be available directly from the factory or in classic After Sales from Audi Genuine Accessories immediately upon market launch.

Fans from all over the world can gain an appreciation for the high quality of Audi design at the Wörthersee. The "Follow Me" design in Citrus Yellow with a black checkerboard pattern resembles airport ground control vehicles and features complex color gradients that extend to the bicolor wheels. The "Hot Rod" model boasts a matt-finish look and extremely low ride height thanks to the air suspension. Complementing this look are steel wheels with white-wall tires in keeping with the classic hot rod style.

Of course, the Audi stand would not be complete without a reference to the site of the 29th Wörthersee Tour. The design team has also given a friendly wink to the local water rescue service and "toll sticker collectors," paying them homage with the "Wasserwacht" and "Pickerljäger" A1 special editions, respectively. The seventh special model in an offbeat eggplant purple tone is described by the Audi designers as the "Fashion" edition. The central design element is an elegant checked pattern used both in the interior and on the exterior. A fascinating interplay between matt and gloss finishes provides additional highlights.

Even the start sequence for the Multi Media Interface, with an animated barrage of camera flashes and a red carpet underscore the catwalk qualities of this car.

Two production models of the Audi A1 are also at the Wörthersee, of course. The A1 1.4 TFSI in Misano Red with a dark gray contrast arch is joined at the Audi stand by the A1 1.6 TDI in summery Scuba Blue.

The first thing visitors to the Audi exhibit see is the new Audi R8 GT. The top-of-the-line version of the high-performance sports car will be presented to the general public for the first time at the Wörthersee. The R8 GT is a limited-edition version of its R8 high-performance sports car. Its 5.2-liter V10 has been increased to an output of 412 kW (560 hp). Vehicle weight was reduced by 100 kilograms (220.46 lb). The R8 GT accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h (198.84 mph). The R8 GT is thus more powerful, even lighter and even faster. The exclusive production run is limited to 333 units. Each R8 GT sports a tag with its number on the gear lever knob.

The Audi stand at the GTI meet also features production vehicles from the current Audi model lineup. Audi is presenting an Ice Silver A8, its new flagship, to its fans at the Wörthersee. The public can also take a close look at the TT Roadster and the TT Coupé. Neckarsulm-based quattro GmbH is bringing an additional TT model to Carinthia - the 340 hp TT RS in Misano Red. Standing directly next to that is a white RS 5.

Because Audi cabriolets are a mandatory part of the program for this event, the R8 Spyder 5.2 V10 is also coming to the GTI meet. Audi Genuine Accessories is also showing a red A3 Cabriolet. With this broad lineup, the brand with the four rings is offering something for every Audi fan at the 29th Wörthersee Tour.

Audi Genuine Accessories to sell Audi A1 "competition kit"
With the A1 "competition kit legends interior plus" presented at the 29th Wörthersee Tour, Audi Genuine Accessories (AOZ) offers customers the opportunity to underscore the individuality of their vehicle with innovative adhesive filmdecals, vibrant paint finishes as well as exterior add-on parts and a matching interior.

A1 customers can order the various "competition kits" for their vehicles upon market launch. The "competition kit Aerodynamic" for the exterior comprises a front spoiler lip, side sills, rear diffuser and - depending on the vehicle configuration - sport exhaust tips. Customers can also order a roof spoiler for their A1.

A1 drivers can order the Audi A1 "competition kit legends interior plus" from Audi Genuine Accessories exactly as it was presented at the GTI meet. Audi has therefore dedicated an entire wall to the "legends" design next to the motto vehicle at its stand in Reifnitz, where fans can get complete information about the innovative concept.

For the "legends" look, Audi provides an Amalfi White finish and detailed rally-design. The front spoiler lip and rear diffuser in Begonia Red are every bit a part of the competition kit with legends graphics as the large, gloss-black Number 1 on the hood and the doors. Interior design elements also subtly refer to the Audi rally vehicles of the 1980s. Decorative bezels for the rearview mirror, air vents, door pull handles and the center console invoke Audi's rally heritage. Black cloth floor mats with Begonia Red, Stone Gray and Gray Brown strips round out the package in the footwell. The "competition kit legends interior plus" adds a striking color accent on the leather sport steering wheel, gear shift lever and parking brake lever.

The "competition kit Aeordynamic" - front spoiler lip, side sills, rear diffuser and, depending on the configuration, chrome sport exhaust tips, can be ordered upon market launch for €1,600. The body-color roof spoiler will also be available immediately for €400, but A1 customers will have to wait a few more months for the "legends" decal set. The "legends" look interior is available immediately, however, and starts at €575. The sporty look can be rounded off with modern wheels from Audi Genuine Accessories.

One highlight is the 7.5 J x 18-inch polished cast-aluminum wheel in a 5-arm polygon design finished in anthracite or black. These A1-exclusive wheels are fitted with 225/35 R19 tires.

A1 customers can order the exterior and interior accessory packages from the factory or later through After Sales. All features of the competition kits are also available separately through After Sales.

M-Class Grand Edition and R-Class 2010: Sales start on 4 May

Two new models are enhancing the Mercedes-Benz model port-folio in spring
2010. The new-generation R-Class can be ordered now, with an entry-level
price of Euro 42,100*. With a total of nine basic versions, this attractive,
multi-talented series offers the widest model range in the premium touring
saloon segment. The M-Class Grand Edition is entering model year 2011 with a
price advantage of up to Euro 2670*. This exclusive variant of the company's
bestselling premium SUV, more than 1 million of which have been sold to
date, has a number of attractive, additional features which make this model
even more desirable.

* excl. VAT

The new-generation R-Class has the appearance of being cast from a single
mould. The completely redesigned front end with its restyled bonnet, wings,
radiator grille, headlamps and bumper gives the entire vehicle a harmonious,
dynamic and powerful presence. On request, the front end of the R-Class can
be further enhanced by a chrome clasp with integrated daytime driving lights
in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps. Light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke,
5-twin-spoke or 10-spoke design with sizes from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17
to 21 inches) and the revised rear end with its new bumper cladding,
modified tail lights and integrated exhaust tailpipes likewise increase the
attractiveness of the model-year 2010 R-Class. In addition to the fresher
exterior, it is the inner values of the R?Class that impress. These include
the economy of space of modern MPVs combined with the high quality and
prestige of classic Mercedes-Benz saloon cars. At the same time the latest
generation offers the interior variability of its predecessor, while scoring
with the robustness and all-wheel drive attributes of the Mercedes-Benz
SUVs.

Drive system with a high economy and fun factor

In addition to the smooth, powerful and comfort-enhancing petrol engines
adopted from the preceding model, optimised diesel units increase the
attractiveness of the R-Class. The basic R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model
impresses with its harmonious power delivery and consumes only 7.6 l/100
km**. The R 350 CDI 4MATIC combines the performance of a V8 model with the
fuel economy of a V6 variant, and is happy with 8.5 litres** of diesel per
100 kilometres. The diesel engine developing 195 kW (265 hp) and a torque of
620 newton metres catapults the most sporty of the diesel R-Class models
from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 235 km/h. And
the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC is one of the cleanest diesel models worldwide.
This model with AdBlue© emissions control consumes 8.4 litres** of diesel
per 100 kilometres, and has emissions at the same, low level as a
comparable of a petrol model. As a result, this model already meets the EU-6
exhaust emission standard envisaged for 2014. All the other petrol and
diesel versions of the R-Class comply with the EU-5 standard.

** combined NEDC consumption

All R-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation 7G-TRONIC
automatic transmission. This fuel-efficiency transmission has bearings and
clutches designed for minimum friction. Modified oil pressures and a new
low-friction oil reduce friction and churning losses. The new torque
converter operates particularly efficiently, and therefore saves fuel,
thanks to its slip-reduced lockup clutch. In addition, the power decoupling
function at standstill in D reduces fuel consumption. This technical feature
reduces the transmission's input torque when the car is stationary, for
example at traffic lights.

Extensive model range with nine basic versions

With a total of nine basic versions, the R-Class offers the widest model
range in the premium touring saloon segment. Thanks to its attractive body
design, comprehensive standard features and numerous individualisation
options, the R-Class can be tailored to suit individual preferences. The
seating variants provide a particularly wide scope: specifically designed
for comfortable and safe touring, the saloon has five seats in both the
standard and long-wheelbase versions, but configurations with four, six or
seven seats are also possible. The R-Class offers a further advantage in the
form of a large, flexibly usable luggage compartment: luggage capacity is up
to 1950 litres in the versions with the standard wheelbase, and the
long-wheelbase version provides 2385 litres. The optional EASY PACK tailgate
with switch or key-operated remote control allows easier access to the
luggage compartment. All this makes the R-Class the most variable and
spacious model in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range.

In the airy, high-quality interior, which gives an even more spacious
impression with the optional panoramic glass sunroof, new materials and
colour schemes improve value perception and quality even further. Standard
features include an upholstery combination of Aspen fabric and breathable,
pleasant-feeling ARTICO man-made leather. The interior colour schemes are
new, with almond beige available in combination with mocha brown, or alpaca
grey with basalt grey. Alternatively the interior can be enhanced even
further with a two-tone colour scheme, in which case almond beige and black
or alpaca grey and black form an interesting contrast.

Comprehensive standard equipment, attractive pricing

The price range for the R-Class model series starts at Euro 42,100 for
the R 300. All the models feature numerous details as standard that make for
safe and relaxed driving on both long-distance journeys and on short trips
into town. These include the anticipatory occupant proitection system
PRE-SAFE®, eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints, a tyre
pressure warning system and adaptive brake lights. Safety is also augmented
by efficient, user-friendly telematic systems such as Audio 20, Audio 50 APS
or COMAND APS. THERMATIC automatic climate control is also standard
equipment, as is an AUX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment
devices.

In addition to the extensive standard features, the R-Class has numerous
assistance systems which ensure ride comfort and safety at the highest
level, and underline the leading position of the model series in this market
segment. These include DISTRONIC proximity control, AIRMATIC air suspension
with the Adaptive Damping System ADS or Blind Sport Assist, which is
available for this model series for the first time and can make lane-changes
much safer. The LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system makes for easy
and convenient operation of the telematics, while a reversing camera allows
confident parking and manoeuvring in awkward spaces. The rear seat
entertainment system enables passengers in the rear to enjoy their own
onboard entertainment programme.

The feel-good atmosphere that is the hallmark of any Mercedes-Benz

Edition mood. The hard-wearing, breathable and pleasant-feeling ARTICO
man-made leather upholstery with contrasting seams and raised piping is
reserved exclusively for this model series, and ensures outstanding seating
comfort. The dashboard in a 3D-look is also lined with ARTICO, while the
centre door panels are lined with real leather. The sporty nature of this
series is accentuated by an AMG sports steering wheel in leather with shift
paddles, sports pedals of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and
stainless steel door entry panels. A Grand Edition emblem on the centre
console provides the reference to exclusivity. A full leather interior is
available on request, likewise with contrasting seams and piping. Comfort
head restraints are included as standard.

In 1997 the M-Class was the first premium SUV

The M-Class is seen as the precursor to the modern premium SUVs, and is
one of the most popular SUV models worldwide. Since the world premiere of
the first model generation in 1997, more than one million examples have left
the production lines in Tuscaloosa, USA. Two variants of the M-Class are
available to cater to the different requirements of off-road drivers: in
addition to the basic 4MATIC version with its electronically controlled
off-road driving modes, the "Offroad-Pro Engineering package" can be ordered
to make the M-Class capable of mastering even the most difficult terrain.
Like all 4MATIC models, the M-Class has a special driving mode which
counters critical behaviour when towing a trailer right from the outset,
thereby decisively contributing to handling safety.

Grand Edition equipment package with a price advantage of 40
percent

The new Grand Edition equipment package is available for all models in
the series with the exception of the ML 63 AMG. At the package price of Euro
3990, there is a price advantage of Euro 2670 compared to ordering the
features individually for the variants with a V6 engine. The price advantage
is Euro 2015 for the V8 models ML 500 4MATIC and ML 450 CDI 4MATIC.

Volkswagen Golf Blue-E-Motion Concept

Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf blue-e-motion concept car in a ceremonial presentation today for the German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel.

The Golf blue-e-motion concept car is powered by an electric motor integrated in the engine compartment in front that delivers a total of 113 HP. The car has an autonomy of 150 kilometers and can hit a top speed of 86 mph, while the sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in 11.8 seconds. The concept car will be undergoing tests in all conceivable weather conditions next year with the use of 500 test cars.

That electric engine is able to develop a maximum power of 85 kW, that means 115 horsepower, but the maximum torques is bigger, of 270 Nm which is obtained almost instantaneously. The engine is powered by a package of litiu-ion batteries placed centrally under the back seat and in the trunk, like this it’s capacity goes from 350 liters to 237 liters. Power comes from a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 26.5 kilowatt-hours.

Press Release

Initial Facts: Golf blue-e-motion - Presentation at Foundation Event
for a "National Platform for Electric Mobility"
  • Volkswagen Presents Golf blue-e-motion Concept to German Chancellor
  • Golf powered by zero-emissions electric motor to launch in 2013
  • Golf blue-e-motion with 150 km range will also satisfy driving needs
    of commuters

Wolfsburg / Berlin, 03 May 2010 - Today, German Chancellor Dr. Angela
Merkel will have a close look at a concept of the future Golf blue-e-motion
in Berlin. Volkswagen is forging new links to the era of electric mobility
with this pure electric drive version of the most successful European car
ever produced. In 2013, after the debut of the Up blue-e-motion (a new city
specialist), the Golf blue-e-motion and the technically closely-related
Jetta blue-e-motion will launch on the market. In the same timeframe, the
Lavida blue-e-motion will also launch in China. The stated objective:
Volkswagen wants to use bestsellers such as the Golf to take electric
vehicles out of their niche model status and to become the market leader for
a new type of sustainable mobility by 2018. This strategy coincides with
planning by the German federal government, which would like to see about one
million electric vehicles on the streets by 2020.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of
Volkswagen AG: "Future electric cars give us enormous opportunities for
reshaping mobility to be even more sustainable. When it comes to the
environment, however, we must ensure that the energy used to operate these
electric cars is produced from renewable sources. Since automotive
manufacturers do not have any influence on the types of power plants that
are built, the federal government must ensure that eco-friendly energy
sources are utilised. Only then will we experience a genuine transition to a
new era."

In parallel with the electric vehicle offensive, Volkswagen is
accelerating the introduction of new hybrid models as well. The new Touareg
Hybrid is already on the market; in 2012 a hybrid version of the Jetta will
debut, then in 2013 the Golf Hybrid and Passat Hybrid will launch. Just as
methodically, Volkswagen will continue its development work on advanced and
extremely efficient petrol, diesel and natural gas engines (TDI, TSI,
EcoFuel), because it is an indisputable fact that a wide variety of drive
technologies will coexist far into the future. "This makes it all the more
important for the German federal government to proactively support the
introduction of new technologies. With regard to electric mobility, the
current temporary exemption of E-cars from taxes is inadequate," says Prof.
Dr. Winterkorn. The Volkswagen chief continues: "Starting in 2013 - the
launch year for many new electric vehicles - the purchase of cars with
zero-emissions drive systems should be promoted with a sustainability
incentive. France, for example, has already pledged a cash incentive of
several thousand Euros to buyers. We need to send such a signal in Germany
as well. Moreover, and this is no less important, the German federal
government must very quickly make provisions for broad coverage with a
network of recharging stations across the republic, so that the
infrastructure is available at the same time the electric car offensive is
launched. Each new recharging station will also reinforce the public's trust
in the everyday utility of electric vehicles. Both of these components -
state-funded incentives and infrastructure - are crucial and cannot endure
any delay."

Golf blue-e-motion concept car - highly anticipated

The Golf blue-e-motion concept being presented to German Chancellor
Angela Merkel will be powered by an electric motor integrated in the engine
compartment in front, and its power of 85 kW / 115 PS drives the car
silently. Like all electric motors, the motor used in the Golf also outputs
a very high maximum torque (270 Newton-meter) right from a stop. The result:
more fun in zero-emissions driving. The electricity for driving the electric
motor is stored in a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 26.5
kilowatt-hours.

A driving range of up to 150 kilometres can be realised in the Golf
blue-e-motion; the specific range depends on driving style and factors such
as use of the air conditioning and heating system. This range meets the
needs of most German commuters: According to the German Federal Statistical
Office, 6 of every 10 people in the workforce commute by car - on average
45.8 percent drive less than 10 kilometres (one-way commute), another 28.1
percent between 10 and 25 kilometres and 16.2 percent over 25 kilometres.
The Golf blue-e-motion can also handle the driving ranges typically covered
by many service providers. In short-distance driving, the zero-emissions
Golf offers a sustainable solution to private users as well.

More noticeably than on today's modern petrol or diesel engines, the
maximum range of an electric car is severely reduced when its maximum power
is demanded frequently. However, the Golf blue-e-motion - with its top speed
of 140 km/h - provides ample power reserves so that less energy is consumed
while driving, and it can even coast or "sail". "Sailing" occurs whenever
the driver - adopting an anticipatory style of driving - releases the gas
pedal, or more apropos: the electric pedal. As in the drive system of the
Touareg Hybrid, which is being produced today, the motor is then is
disengaged from the drivetrain so that the car can coast with the least
possible drag. The Golf blue-e-motion even recovers kinetically generated
energy by battery regeneration in this mode of driving.

Adapted to the vehicle's architecture, the concept car's battery unit is
located in the bootspace (useful remaining cargo capacity: 237 litres),
under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel (between the front
seats). A separate air cooling system ensures a constant thermal environment
in the battery compartment.

As mentioned, all key primary and secondary drive components were
integrated in the engine compartment at the front of the vehicle. In coming
up with this design, developers applied experience they gained in numerous
design studies. As in the E-Up concept car, an integral form of electric
drive is used in the Golf blue-e-motion. Representing the core of the
integral drive are the electric motor together with a transmission and
differential. Energy management is handled by a high-voltage
pulse-controlled inverter, which - along with the 12 Volt electrical
system's DC/DC converter and charging module - is integrated in the compact
integral drive. The entire unit is relatively light and compact. The
five-door and five-seat Golf blue-e-motion, for example, weighs just 205
kilograms more than a comparable Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG - despite the
fact that electric car batteries are known to be heavy and weigh 1,545
kilograms on the concept car.

Next year, Volkswagen will be testing the drivetrain and energy storage
modules of the future Golf blue-e-motion with a fleet of 500 test cars -
under all conceivable conditions. Essentially, the countdown to production
launch of the future Golf blue-e-motion has already begun. The future is
almost here, especially in Germany, because this is where one million
electric vehicles will be on the roads starting in 2020 - this goal was
resolved by the German federal government on August 2009 and is established
in the "National Development Plan for Electric Mobility." A long road lies
ahead of us until 2020, especially since battery costs certainly need to be
drastically reduced. However, another certainty is that a large number of
the one million electric vehicles of the year 2020 will wear the VW badge.

Rendering: 2012 BMW F12 M6

The new 6 series is obviously coming and it makes little sense to us that an M6 would not be soon to follow. The previous generation M6 shared the M5's drivetrain just as the new M6 would be likely to. Too much development cost has been poured into the M5 to not take advantage of it in an M6. With M SUV's now and M branding ever expanding, an M6 will likely be coming soon sharing many similarities with the soon to be launched M5.

It was only a matter of time until some crafty photoshop assassins put a hit on the alleged future BMW 6-Series. With fresh new materials to use, the fine folks at BimmerBoost have created some renderings of the 2012 BMW M6.

Details are scarce at the moment, but the new M6 will likely be powered by an upgraded version of the 4.4 liter V8 engine, producing near 600 horsepower, similar to the upcoming BMW M5. As with the regular 6 Series, we expect lots of Gran Coupe design elements to make it into the M6, featuring an aggressive front-end, a rear bumper with an integrated diffuser. As with any M car, expect to see aerodynamic side skirts, wide rear fenders and the usual four-tailpipe exhaust system.

VW invites users to help create the Infotainment systems of the future

Open Innovation Contest, "App My Ride", begins on 3rd May

Wolfsburg, 26 April 2010 - Volkswagen is inviting designers, programmers, developers and interested users to help develop applications for the Infotainment systems of the future as part of the Open Innovation Contest, "App My Ride". With this contest, Volkswagen has become the first car manufacturer to use the idea of open innovation for the further development of its products.

In the so-called "App My Ride" competition, users can jointly develop new Infotainment applications with Volkswagen. A jury of experts will select the winner whose creativity will be rewarded with special prizes. "Our aim is to invite the international developer community to take part in designing a future system," says Prof. Dr Jürgen Leohold, Head of the Volkswagen Group Research. So-called apps, also known as application programmes for certain devices which are available through an online shop, have helped to contribute to the smartphone boom. Applications designed by users (User Generated Content) are of central importance to the boom and are made available online by other users. Companies like Apple and Google successfully aid this nearly inexhaustible source of innovation.

"A quiet revolution is taking place right now," explains Dr Johann Füller, CEO of the innovation agency partner to Volkswagen through the "App My Ride" competition, Hyve AG. "The customer-orientated culture of the internet places an enormous power in the hands of the users. Leading organisations are starting to harness this power to develop better solutions and increase their competitiveness." Exactly what the "App My Ride" contest is targeting.

Currently a prototype for Volkswagen's Infotainment system is being developed in which Flash applications designed by different creators can be accumulated. In order to research the potential of apps for the vehicle Infotainment system, Volkswagen is trying to produce the most varied collection of applications possible.

An "innovation community" open to all internet users will be created as of 3rd May 2010 for the competition under the following URL: app-my-ride.volkswagen.com. Here, participants in the competition can log in and either load programmed apps or send in their creative ideas for future ones. "The participants are supposed to imagine what the purpose of their ideal Infotainment system is and how it would work and now they have the opportunity to make it a reality. At the same time, you can analyse the existing apps on our platform and discuss their design, uses and purposes," explains Dr Peter Oel, Head of "Control Designs and Drivers" of Volkswagen Group Research.

To develop an app, the participants must have the following:

- An idea for an app to be installed in a vehicle

- Graphic design of the user interface

- Programming in Adobe Flash / Flex

The purpose, design and logical construction of the app should be geared towards the possible requirements of drivers and other occupants.

The participant's creativity will be rewarded at the end of the competition. The most innovative application will be chosen by the "App My Ride" community and a jury consisting of Volkswagen managers and external experts. Besides cash and non-cash prizes worth up to €14,000, a special prize for students will also be awarded. This involves a placement within Volkswagen Group Research in Tokyo, Shanghai, California or Wolfsburg. Moreover, the winner of the competition can also expect an exclusive trip to take part in an international vehicle presentation which covers the costs of the flight and hotel.

Elegance and dynamic performance at the first BMW Design Night in Beijing.

Munich. With an exclusive Design Night on the evening of the first press day at Auto China in Beijing (April 23rd to May 2nd 2010), BMW provides an in-depth insight into its design philosophy and development strategy. The program of the BMW Design Night is modular in structure and presents extensive background information on the premium automobile manufacturer's innovative design culture. In addition to highlighting the long versions of the BMW 5 Series developed specially for the Chinese market, the main focus is on an elegant 4-door vehicle with striking dynamic proportions: the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

The concept study on display symbolises the outstanding design expertise of BMW. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé concentrates the fundamental values of the brand. Its body design authentically captures a sense of superior dynamic performance and high-quality elegance. The shaping style, which follows a coherent pattern down to the last detail, convincingly visualises BMW's philosophy as an automobile manufacturer. As with the Concept CS 2007, BMW once again sets new benchmarks in the design of 4-door coupes with a distinctive sporty character.

Based on a powerful tradition in this segment, the BMW Concept Gran Coupé carries the essence of brand values and the genes of BMW design into the future. The concept shows the classic features of all BMW coupes: the long wheelbase, the vaulted bonnet with forward-pointing lines, the set-back greenhouse, the flat silhouette, the coupe-style roof line and the short front overhang reflect the dynamic potential of the vehicle. The surface structures and the fact that the design quality is geared towards perfection illustrate the aspiration of the brand BMW to build 4-door high-performance coupes with the sportiest proportions and the most elegant design.

In the BMW Concept Gran Coupé, BMW presents the vision of a 4-door vehicle which combines the exclusivity of a Gran Turismo with the fascination of a high-performance sports car. The design of the concept study underscores the expertise of the brand BMW in the development of vehicles with a distinctive sporty character which offer space for more than two occupants. This reflects the particular quality of the BMW Group design philosophy, which consists in precisely and authentically translating the specific values of product substance into an aesthetically convincing shaping style. The design process is set through with a passion for aesthetic appeal and dynamic performance, precision and perfection. This is how the uncompromising premium aspiration of a BMW Group product, the unmistakable style of the brand BMW and the precisely defined character of each model are given concrete form.

The body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé expresses sporty flair in its ultimate form. The 4-door vehicle clearly signals the very highest level of dynamic performance with its extremely elegant, flat and coupe-like proportions. Stretching the entire length of the vehicle and therefore measuring almost 5 metres, flowing lines dominate the design, giving rise to outstanding aerodynamic levels, just as the low centre of gravity reflects an agile driving response.

The front section is defined by the BMW kidney grille characteristic of the brand - an icon of body design which is not just central but also a dominating element of front design. The kidney grille of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé has a flat appearance, with an asymmetrical side view which emphasises the close attention to detail. The central section with the kidney grille is formally separated from other BMW icons such as the headlights and air inlets. The clarity of the LED front lights highlights the vehicle's precision and premium aspirations. The air inlet runs back an extremely long way into the side section, making the front section appear particularly wide. All elements of the front section appear to merge to form a single, elegantly curved movement.

The sporty, flat silhouette provides an impressive body height of just under 1.40 metres. This makes the BMW Concept Gran Coupé up to 100 millimetres flatter than the BMW 5 Series or the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The roof line tapers off gently into the rear, thereby elongating the vehicle's proportions. The forward-tilted shark nose visually extends the bonnet and creates characteristic BMW proportions with its forward-pointing dynamism. This stretched character is also highlighted by the side lines, where there is a deliberate avoidance of the typical sill line. The flat proportions make the window graphics appear extremely narrow and dynamic at the same time. Another BMW design icon, the Hofmeister kink, is especially strikingly formed - additionally emphasising the exclusive character of the vehicle. The frameless doors give the BMW Concept Gran Coupé a modern character since the glass surfaces appear to merge seamlessly without being interrupted by columns.

At the rear, only design elements such as the lights and tailpipe trim appear to be visible at first sight. The entire rear section appears slimmer and lighter at the centre, though still exuding power and dynamic performance since the volume is reinforced towards the sides. The L-shaped light banks feature a slight, almost subtle curve and the entire design of the lines and surfaces highlights the vehicle's elegant overall appearance. The third brake light, positioned in the rear window, is also fitted with LED technology. It takes up the kink in the roof and illuminates the entire width of the rear window. The powerfully flared wheel arches above the rear axle highlight the particularly sporty character of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

Another highly sporty and also elegant feature is the rim concept in which the individual spokes extend deep into the centre of the rim towards the hub, giving the rim a striking three-dimensional quality. The spokes themselves are not solid but relief-milled, giving them a visual lightness.

The sculptural shaping style characteristic of the entire body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé permits a unique interaction between concave and convex surfaces. It also enables the light to be selectively reflected and channelled. Thus the exterior mirrors integrated in the window shaft appear very light, blending harmoniously into the side view since their shape assimilates the entire line styling. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé is a further development of the classic design of a notchback sedan in which the individual body sections merge harmoniously into a flat, elongated and at the same time dynamic overall image. The effect of this 4-door vehicle derives not just from specific highlights but from its overall appearance, which authentically reflects its character. The car's dynamic potential is embodied in its proportions and lines, signalling power but also elegance and forward thrust.
