Under the Hood
The new Volkswagen L1 Concept is powered by a 0.8-liter TDI 2-cylinder engine that produces 20 kW / 27 hp (at 4,000 rpm) and a peak torque of 100 N·m / 74 lb-ft (at 1,900 rpm). It is assisted by a 10 kW / 14 hp electric motor that can move the car on its own over short distances and can captures energy via regenerative braking.
In normal operation the electric motor can support the TDI engine in conditions such as by electronic load point shifting and in acceleration. If necessary--generally during acceleration--the E-motor can supply 40% additional torque over the entire speed engine speed range.
The transmission is a 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG).
The batteries that power the electric motor are lithium-ion and are located at the front of the car (for better balance, no doubt).

Fuel Economy, Top Speed
The new Volkswagen L1 Concept has a combined cycle fuel consumption of 1.38 L/100km (170 mpg US) using the European cycle.
CO2 emissions are an incredible 36 g/km (well, incredible compared to most other cars, but the goal should be zero, of course).
Top speed is 160 km/h (99 mph).
